Finding your first job can be a challenge. If you have never looked before you may not know where to start. Additionally, you are in a bit of a pickle where people may not want to hire you without experience, but you cannot get experience without being hired and given the opportunity to gain it. However, it is not a hopeless case. In fact, there are steps that you can take to pave the road to being able to find your first part time job.

First thing is first. When looking for a part time job, you need to figure out what exactly you are looking for. Spend some time thinking about what your specific skill set and interests are. If you hate everything that has to do with electronics then you may not want to apply at your local Best Buy store. Instead, you may want to look at trying to get a part time job at your local library or bookstore if you are an avid reader. Additionally, you will want to spend some time crafting your resume. Though you may not have a lot of career experience, you can list your education, special skills, references, and any volunteer work that you may have done. This will give employers information on you at a glance.

Once you have done that you can begin your job search. The newspaper is a great place to search for part time job opportunities. However, that is not the only place to look for jobs. You can also look online via some of the employment sites like monster.com, careerbuilder.com, and jobbing.com to name a few. It will also not hurt to keep your eye out for “now hiring” signs at some of your favorite businesses. When in doubt, it never hurts to ask!

After you have assembled your list of places to apply you need to get yourself ready to go in and fill out employment applications. To do this you need to really be honest with yourself about your appearance. When you walk into any business to apply, you want to look like you are ready to take on a career. This means that you should be neatly and professionally dressed, your hair should be combed, and your nails clean. Impressions are really everything, and you want to ensure that your first one is a good one.

Competition is fierce in the job market, even when it comes to part time jobs. It is more important than ever to put your best foot forward when you apply for a job. Look your best and always act professional, even if you are applying for a casual job position. Your potential employer will view you in a better light than he might otherwise.

Once you have submitted your job application and spoken with the manager, your job is not over. It is also your responsibility to follow up on the opportunity. Either send a note or make a phone call to thank them for the opportunity and to reaffirm your interest in their company. Do not be pushy with this, but simply honest and grateful for them taking the time to meet with you. If you walk your way through this process correctly then you are sure to walk away with a brand new part time job
